Hailsham Town Council has received positive feedback from residents on social media in recent months, who have praised the Council’s cleaning contractors for their work in keeping the town centre public conveniences consistently sanitised and deep-cleaned throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

The public toilets, adjacent to the Asda car park in North Street, have been open to the public to use for the majority of lockdown and despite a reduction in opening hours and the impact of the pandemic, the Town Council’s contractors have managed to keep them in a safe condition for residents and visitors throughout.

The public toilet facility, which is free to use, was opened to the public in August 2014 and comprises two cubicles, one of which is fully wheelchair accessible and includes baby-changing facilities.

An outside contractor is currently responsible for the opening, closing and cleaning of the toilet block on a daily basis and, to allow more frequent cleaning of toilets, the facility currently operates six days a week (Monday to Saturday), with opening hours of 9.30am-4pm each day.

Town Clerk John Harrison said: “Hailsham Town Council acknowledges the importance of public toilet availability and as a result of its commitment to provide clean, safe and accessible toilets, opened the new public toilets in North Street to replace those in Vicarage Field which were maintained and closed by Wealden District Council.”

Commenting on the positive feedback from the public, Mr Harrison added: “Residents and visitors welcomed the opening of the toilets in North Street seven years ago and we have received a lot of positive comments about the facilities since then and more recently too, particularly about how clean and accessible they are, despite the increased difficulties associated with the coronavirus pandemic and the requirement for deeper and more frequent cleaning.”

“Hailsham is a growing market town and I’m sure these facilities will continue to be well used by townspeople and visitors.”

The public should be aware that there are other toilet facilities in the town centre including those participating in Wealden District Council’s Community Toilet Scheme (CTS). Those taking part in the scheme in Hailsham are:

  • Freedom Leisure, Vicarage Lane (disabled access/baby changing facilities)
  • Waitrose, Vicarage Field
  • Callenders Restaurant, 80/82 High Street
  • Costa Coffee, 26B High Street (disabled access/baby changing facilities)
