Town Council Encourages Residents to Follow the Latest Covid Protection Guidelines

Council News & Services

Coronavirus text

Residents in Hailsham are being urged by the Town Council to follow the latest advice from the government and encourage visitors to do the same, with COVID-19 infection rates on the rise nationally.

Further updates relating to the whole of England are expected on a more frequent basis in the coming weeks as it is acknowledged that cases of COVID-19 infection are rising significantly.

“While Hailsham has a reportedly lower number of infection cases compared to many other towns in the southeast, we all have to take care, be considerate of the more vulnerable people in society and remind others to do the same,” said Town Mayor and Chairman of Hailsham Town Council, Cllr Paul Holbrook.

Cllr Holbrook added: “Hailsham has done so well since the onset of the pandemic in the spring and I’m extremely proud of those of you who have respected social distancing rules, worn face coverings where needed and those who are looking after each other. I urge everyone to stay vigilant and continue to follow the advice of health experts, as we are in no way out of the woods yet!”

“I cannot express to you enough how important it is to maintain social distancing and good hand hygiene, given the recent increase in the number of coronavirus infections in England. We are doing our best to hold our own against COVID-19, but it is essential to continue frequent hand washing and the proper use of face coverings in public areas including shops and supermarkets, as well as observing the latest social and physical distancing rules set by Government.”

“There has been a small number of reports of people not wearing face coverings in local shops. Whilst a very small minority of people are not observing the regulations, it is important for these people to realise what impact their decision to ignore social distancing measures could have on family, friends and the wider community – in particular, those who are classified as vulnerable to the coronavirus.”

“When out and about in the town shopping, using public indoor spaces and, of course, public transport, I strongly encourage people to wear face coverings where required – and where you cannot maintain social distancing. Thank you.”

Public open spaces in Hailsham such as the Common Pond, Country Park, Western Road Recreation Ground and Maurice Thornton Playing Field continue to be well used and residents are encouraged to continue to observe social distancing and hand hygiene advice when visiting these sites.

The same applies to Town Council-maintained allotments in Battle Road, Station Road and Harold Avenue, and the public toilets located in North Street, whereby residents are urged to observe the latest social distancing guidelines.

Additionally, children and families must follow current social distancing guidelines at the play areas and outdoor gyms across the town, maintain good hand hygiene and not enter any of the sites if they are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. Signs reminding users of the latest requirements and guidance are on display at play area and outdoor gym entry points.

“Many new cases of COVID-19 stem from gatherings where people are letting their guard down or when not following the recommended guidance regarding hand hygiene, social distancing and use of face masks,” added Cllr Holbrook. “We must remain vigilant at all times and continue to follow the latest government guidelines.”

In closing, I wish to assure you all that the Town Council is continuing to serve its residents during the pandemic.
