Hailsham Town Council is encouraging residents and people considering moving to Hailsham to take part in a Housing Needs Survey that has recently gone live and will help inform future housing and development decisions in the town.
Wealden District Council is currently preparing a new Local Plan, which will set out how growth and development will be managed across the district over the next 15 years in response to population change, housing demand and economic pressures. A draft Local Plan is expected to be published for public consultation in Spring 2026, and it is anticipated that Hailsham will once again be identified as a key location for growth.
Alongside this work, Hailsham Town Council is in the process of updating its Neighbourhood Plan, with public consultation already underway. The updated Plan seeks to ensure that future development meets local housing needs, safeguards the character of the town and is supported by appropriate infrastructure and services.
To support this work and strengthen its engagement with the emerging Local Plan, the Town Council has launched a Housing Needs Survey and is inviting residents to share their views and experiences.

Cllr Mary Laxton, Chair of the Neighbourhood Planning Committee, commented: “Decisions about housing have long-term consequences for our town, and it is vital that these decisions are informed by the real experiences and needs of local people. By taking part in this survey, residents can help ensure that future housing in Hailsham better reflects local circumstances and supports a balanced and sustainable community.”
She added: “The information gathered will strengthen the evidence base we rely on when engaging with the Local Plan process and when shaping policies in the Neighbourhood Plan, enabling the Town Council to represent Hailsham clearly and confidently.”
Residents are strongly encouraged to take part in the survey. The greater the number of responses received, the stronger the evidence available to support the Town Council’s representations on behalf of the community. All responses will be anonymised, and any personal information provided will remain confidential, in accordance with data protection requirements.
Residents who require a paper copy of the survey can contact Hailsham Town Council on 01323 841702 or by email at enquiries@hailsham-tc.gov.uk.
