The Mayor of Hailsham Councillor Paul Holbrook has opened several new businesses in the town in recent weeks, Hailsham Barbers, Hay’s Cafe and 847847 Taxis being the latest in a succession to set up shop in and around the town centre.

The Mayor was joined by business owners and staff at a series of official opening events which have taken place during the past month, including the new taxi service and airport transfer business 847847 Taxis in George Street, the brand new Hailsham Barbers in Hailsham High Street and Hay’s Cafe situated in Diplocks Way on the industrial estate.

Other businesses which have opened recently include Flowers By Maybugs in Vicarage Field and pet/bird feed supplies shop Happy Paws in St Mary’s Walk.

“I was delighted to be asked to cut the ribbon at the opening of these new businesses and it’s wonderful to see enterprising people setting up new ventures in our town,” said Cllr Holbrook. “We have an increasingly vibrant town centre, despite the effects of the current pandemic – and the opening of these new businesses is a great addition.”

“I wish these new businesses every success in the future.”

Cllr Holbrook added: “I’d like to take this opportunity to say that what we must all remember, is that local independent businesses are an asset to our community and it is important that we support our local economy by purchasing goods and services from them whenever possible rather than relying on just the larger out-of-town stores and service providers.”

During the past few years, the town centre has welcomed a range of new businesses, including those which have expanded and subsequently relocated to larger premises and retail spaces.

There are currently 12 empty retail units in Hailsham town centre, which compares well to national averages.

Deputy Town Clerk and Business Enterprise Manager Mickey Caira said: “Hailsham is the place to be and there has been a marked improvement in the number of empty shops in the town centre which has fallen considerably since last year.”

“While it may be tempting to shop solely online during the pandemic, people need to consider all of the implications for local bricks and mortar businesses,” added Mr Caira.

“Many Hailsham residents haven’t yet incorporated buying local into their lifestyles and it’s imperative that people realise what unique benefits local products have to offer. By switching your shopping habits and supporting your local shops, you can make a big difference and really help to keep Hailsham buzzing and prevent further vacant retail units in the town.”
