On accepting the chain of office for a third year at the Annual Meeting held on Thursday 27 May, Town Mayor and Chairman of Hailsham Town Council, Councillor Paul Holbrook, stated that his long-term vision is for a town that is community driven, with a positive and co-operative mindset as we overcome the coronavirus pandemic – and will continue working towards an improved town that will become an attractive focus for the growing population of Hailsham.

“I am extremely honoured to have been elected by the Council to Mayorship of the town for another year, yet, despite the many privileges associated with the role, I am aware of the burden of responsibility which it brings as an ambassador and representative of the people of Hailsham.

A lot can be achieved in our town and the Council has voted in as Mayor and Chairman somebody who will continue to move forward and who will work with different groups of people to face the challenges we face in the next year. Hailsham is a special place, and I will work hard to ensure that it remains so.

In my capacity as Chairman of the Council, I will work hard for the good of this town and all who live and work here. I am at ease knowing that much can be achieved with the support of an active team of fellow town councillors and officers – and the support of the town’s people too.

Like the rest of the country, we in Hailsham continue to reflect on the events of the past year and the adverse effect the dreadful coronavirus pandemic has had on our community.

The last year or so has been a time of great uncertainty – and indeed, major upheaval for most of us – where we have had to acclimatise to the ‘new norm’ and make sizeable sacrifices to keep ourselves, our loved ones, and the community at large safe.

Further down the line, although we still have some way to go in terms of combating the spread of the virus for good, we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel and can take great pride in the way we have adapted our lives to deal with the situation and protect our local community.

From the onset of the pandemic, Hailsham Town Council has worked with community partners and helped fund projects which provide essential support to those at risk, as well as maintain those essential services that we all depend on.

There are many other positives which have come about in recent weeks, including the reopening of businesses with a new and more optimistic outlook for us – and a recovery that continues to put us back on track both socially and economically.

Whilst it is good news that restrictions will hopefully continue to ease even more in the coming weeks, it is essential that we all continue to follow the rules regarding social distancing and hygiene. Please continue to follow public health advice to protect yourself and your loved ones by following the latest social contact rules, wearing a mask or face covering in indoor public spaces, and sanitise your hands on a regular basis. Your efforts have saved lives and will continue to save lives.

So, as we move forward, it is vital that we all continue to do our bit to help us create a new future and return to normality in our everyday lives.

In closing, I’d like to take the opportunity to say that, over the years, I have witnessed how the Town Mayor and Chairman can be a unifying force for the town and I really hope that I can achieve this too during my third term.

I look forward to the many opportunities to recognise, celebrate and support dedicated people working in the voluntary, business, education, and local government sectors.  I am at your disposal and if I can be of assistance to you in any way, please contact the Town Council Offices.”

Councillor Paul Holbrook, Town Mayor & Chairman
