Mayor of Hailsham Donates Money to St Wilfrid’s Hospice

The Mayor of Hailsham has made a donation of £200 to St Wilfrid’s Hospice, one of a number of recent donations to local charities and youth services given as a result of coming in under budget on his allocated mayoral allowance for the last financial year.

Mayor and Chairman Cllr Paul Holbrook presented the cheque to St Wilfrid’s Hospice fundraising officers at The Rajdoot restaurant in Hailsham today [30 September], The Rajdoot itself being a generous donation-provider by way of recent fundraising events organised at the restaurant.

In his role as mayor, Cllr Holbrook receives a yearly allowance to cover events – and other costs associated with the office of Town Mayor – but in the previous financial year, he did not utilise all of the allowance and has stated that he will donate what was remaining to two local charities, the town’s youth services and other local initiatives.

Town councillors considered and agreed a request by Cllr Holbrook to re-allocate funds from the previous year’s Mayoral Allowance, amounting to £778, and the Mayor has donated £200 to Hailsham Foodbank and £200 to Hailsham Youth Service, in addition to £200 to St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne.

The remaining £178 will be donated to support local initiatives in the coming weeks, details of which will be announced on the Town Council’s social media pages.

Town Mayor Cllr Holbrook commented: “I am extremely pleased to have been able to donate money from last year’s mayoral allowance to Hailsham Foodbank, Hailsham Youth Service and St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Now more than ever, the charity and community services sector needs support to continue doing the great work they do every day.”

“My donation will help St Wilfrid’s to continue their good work – providing high quality specialist palliative and end-of-life care in our local community. Many of the people who I have spoken to in Hailsham that have had some kind of interaction with the hospice has nothing but commendation for the care and attention they offer to patients.”

“I also take pleasure in donating a trolley bed to St Wilfrid’s Hospice and will be giving that to the Life Care Manager at the hospice.”
