A £100 donation from the Mayor of Hailsham has been awarded to Hailsham Boxing Club, a local boxing club and charity fundraiser, one of a number of recent grants given to local community groups and voluntary associations as a result of coming in under budget on his allocated allowance for the last financial year.

Town Mayor Cllr Paul Holbrook presented a cheque to founder Sam Buchanan on Tuesday [3 May], funds from which will go towards maintaining the club’s premises in George Street, upgrades to the gym and any future charity fundraising projects.

In his role as mayor, Cllr Holbrook receives a yearly allowance to cover events and other costs associated with the office of Town Mayor, but in the previous financial year, he did not use all of the allowance and stated that he would donate what was remaining to local community, voluntary associations and charities, as well as other and other local initiatives.

“Sam and his team do such marvellous work for the Hailsham community,” said Cllr Holbrook. “Their training volunteers teach boxing skills to children, but also provide structure by mentoring young people, instilling discipline, confidence and respect.”

“The Hailsham Boxing Club community project has many different members, a glowing track record of helping them in life and giving them hope, and offers something worthwhile with massive achievements to be attained for many individuals.”

“I’m delighted to be able to support their good work by way of this small donation.”

Hailsham Boxing Club, formerly Glove Up For Good was founded in April 2020 by Sam Buchanan, originally offering free boxing and fitness training sessions in Eastbourne for adults and children – alongside running challenges to raise money for charity. Knowing that they wouldn’t be able to train outdoors long-term they acquired a building – ‘The Warehouse’ in George Street, Hailsham – which they transformed into the Hailsham Boxing Club gym.

As well as offering free boxing training sessions, Hailsham Boxing Club sets various challenges and activities such as raffles and giveaways to help raise awareness and vital funds for charity.

Sam Buchanan commented: “We are grateful to the Mayor for receiving this generous donation. The money will be used on various upgrades for the gym. Thanks from all the team at Hailsham Boxing Club.”
