A popular flower shop in the town centre has received first prize in the search to find the best dressed VE Day shop window display in Hailsham.

Independent business Bloomfields Florist, situated in Hailsham High Street, was chosen by the Town Council as the winner of the competition set up to encourage businesses to decorate their shop fronts to mark the 80th Anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day.

Several shop displays were short-listed for the award, including those created by The Laurel Cafe in George Street (second place) and Legends Hairdressers (third place), both of which received certificates in appreciation of their hard work and dedication to making the town centre look eye-catching and reflect the spirit of the important historic occasion.

However, there was no topping the efforts of Bloomfields Florist, impressing judges with their front window display which incorporated a traditional VE Day theme – showcasing flags, bunting, flowers and wartime memorabilia for passers-by to enjoy.

Shop staff members were delighted when representatives from the Town Council, including the Town Mayor Cllr Paul Holbrook and Deputy Mayor Cllr Anne Marie Ricketts, dropped in to hand out the special trophy and certificate awards to the worthy winner.

“We were impressed by the way that shops had put a lot of hard work and effort into their VE Day window displays,” said Town Mayor, Cllr Holbrook. “I’d like to thank all the shops who created such brilliant displays, as well as my colleagues at the Town Council for organising and judging the competition.”

Deputy Town Mayor, Cllr Anne Marie Ricketts commented: “The competition was a fantastic opportunity for businesses to join in with the celebrations and mark the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. I’m delighted to see so many shops in the town centre had joined in on the festivities and captivated their customers’ attention with their imaginative VE Day-themed window shop displays.”
