In an address to town residents, the Mayor of Hailsham, Cllr Paul Holbrook, has outlined the latest steps the town council has had to put into place due to the second coronavirus lockdown and what can be done to help each other.

“I am writing this message to update you all on the various measures we have put into place to help minimise the risk of contracting COVID-19 and navigate the ever-changing environment in Hailsham we are currently experiencing.

These are unprecedented and very worrying times, yet, in response to the challenge presented by the ongoing pandemic, the Town Council continues to work with other local authorities, as well as businesses and community groups.

I know many of you have been affected by the pandemic in one way or another since the spring, and I want to reassure you that your Town Council will continue to play its part in slowing the spread of the virus and encouraging practice of social distancing and other measures in place at the present time.

Regretfully, we had no choice but to close or restrict many of our services once again for the duration of the second national lockdown, in line with advice from the Government.

Although the Town Council offices in Market Street will remain closed to the public, staff are working remotely where possible to keep some services running and the main phone line open during office hours which are 9am-4pm, Monday to Friday.

Members of the public are encouraged to follow the Town Council social media pages and the following web page for updates on Council services and facilities affected: https://www.hailsham-tc.gov.uk/coronavirus-postponement-of-council-activities/.

We are continually monitoring developments concerning COVID-19 very closely in line with Government guidance, and, on behalf of the Town Council, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their understanding of these necessary precautions as we take every step possible to ensure their good health and safety – and that of our members and staff.

One thing is clear – the Coronavirus situation is likely to be part of our everyday lives for much of the future, and it’s crucial that any measures the Town Council take – and all of us as a community take – are sustainable for the long-term.

The health and welfare of all our staff, members and residents is our primary concern and we do not underestimate the challenges which we continue to face due to the pandemic.

Let us all continue the community spirit that Hailsham is renowned for and continue to help those who are self-isolating, the elderly, disabled or those with underlying conditions that put them at risk.

These are challenging times, but I am proud of the response to those challenges by the local community. Let’s continue further and make sure the more vulnerable people who are self-isolating get the help they need. Thank you.”
