Latest Changes to Burial Arrangements in Hailsham

Council News & Services

Hailsham Cemetery

As the Town Council continues to review its service delivery for residents in response to COVID-19, strict measures in relation to burial arrangements at Hailsham Cemetery continue to be practiced so as to protect the local community.

Hailsham Cemetery in Ersham Road will remain open for graveside and ashes burials and, in line with the latest Government guidance, the maximum number of mourners/attendees allowed at graveside burial services is 30. Linked ceremonial events such as ash scatterings can continue with up to 15 people in attendance. Social distancing should be maintained between people who do not live together or share a support bubble.

Cemetery grounds will be closed to the public, except for funerals or burials, commemorative events celebrating the life of a person who has died, or to allow a person to pay respects to a member of their household, a family member or friend.

All restrictions have been put in place to conform to the Government guidance to help combat the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

While Hailsham Cemetery remains open for burials and to visitors, people are encouraged to follow the latest Government advice relating to social distancing:

  • Restrict the number of mourners to follow the latest Government rules/guidance
  • Stay 2 metres apart from people outside of your household where possible, or 1 metre with extra precautions in place, such as face coverings
  • Minimise contact with each other, e.g. no hand-shaking
  • Refrain from attending the cemetery if you are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms
  • Follow all government guidance on personal hygiene prior to, during and after use of the cemetery

Town Clerk John Harrison said: “We recognise this is a distressing time for anyone who has lost a loved one. But we cannot emphasise enough the importance of sticking to these measures and restrictions on service. They are all being put in place to protect not only members of staff who helping to carry out this critical service, but also to protect the public.”

Members of the public can still get in touch with the burial services team by calling Hailsham Town Council on 01323 841702 or emailing david.saxby@hailsham-tc.gov.uk.
