Heritage Trail Offers Fascinating Journey Through Hailsham’s History

Residents and visitors are being encouraged to discover Hailsham’s rich and fascinating past by following the Hailsham Heritage Trail this summer – an enjoyable self-guided walk through the town’s historic streets, with the official guide available for just £1.

Produced by Hailsham Town Council in partnership with respected local historian Paul Endersby, who researched and wrote the guide, the Heritage Trail was launched in 2012 to celebrate the town’s unique history and architectural heritage. Since then, it has become a popular way for people of all ages to explore Hailsham from a different perspective while learning more about the people, places and events that have shaped the town over the centuries.

The illustrated guide features historic photographs, detailed descriptions and a clear walking route linking 27 buildings and locations of historical importance around the town centre and surrounding area.

Among the landmarks featured are The Stone, believed to be Hailsham’s oldest surviving house and dating back to the 1320s, and Hailsham Parish Church, a Grade I listed building with origins in the early fifteenth century. Walkers can also discover the historic Fleur de Lys/Inglenook in Market Street, parts of which date from the reign of Elizabeth I, and Cortlandt in George Street, once home to American-born Philip van Cortlandt before later becoming council offices.

Other stops along the trail include the Old Court House, Hailsham Pavilion, Wellington Lodge, the former Village School and the site of the old Hailsham Railway Station, each offering a fascinating insight into the town’s development and community life through the years.

The Heritage Trail has proved popular with residents, visitors, schools and local history enthusiasts alike, providing an accessible way to learn about Hailsham’s heritage while enjoying a leisurely walk around the town. Whether completed in one visit or explored over several shorter walks, the trail offers something of interest for all ages.

Copies of the Hailsham Heritage Trail Map & Guide are available to purchase from the Town Council Offices in Market Street for just £1, making it one of the most affordable visitor guides available in the town.
