Hailsham’s new Town Crier Terry Tozer has joined The Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers, which represents official town criers throughout the country.

By joining the oldest and largest organisation which represents Town Criers throughout the world, Mr Tozer will be privy to all the news and views of what is happening throughout the appointed role of Town Crier (currently over 150 fellow criers in the UK) and will be invited to compete with other Guild Members in town crier competitions throughout the year.

Hailsham’s new town crier has already been busy delivering his proclamations at the town’s recent Platinum Jubilee community events bedecked in a brand new, hand-made livery, welcoming guest dignitaries to the town and introducing an element of pageantry and to mark the special occasion.

“Oyez!…….” said Town Crier Terry Tozer. “I am very proud and feel deeply honoured to have been selected as Town Crier and Bellman of Hailsham. I think that it’s important to keep ancient traditions such as this alive and prolong our heritage, stretching back in Hailsham over 140 years.”

“The role will add a lovely splash of colour to the town, especially with the addition of the new purple livery.”

“I will endeavour to do my very best and serve you all well. God Save the Queen.”

Jane Smith, Bognor Regis Town Crier and Secretary of The Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers commented, “I can confirm that Terry has now joined the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers and we offer him a very warm welcome to our Guild. Good luck Terry in your new role of Town Crier for Hailsham.”

Town Clerk John Harrison commented: “There are currently over 200 town criers in the UK representing towns and cities, communicating in the oldest method available, by word of mouth. I am pleased that Hailsham is one of these and is able to enhance the image of our market town by having a town crier.”

“Terry has already got stuck into the role and looks forward to being an ambassador for Hailsham, adding a bit of colour to people’s perceptions and memories of the town.”

Subject to availability, as well as promoting the town’s community events, market and festivities, the town crier can be hired by individuals, groups, schools or commercial ventures for events and official openings, as well as charity events.
