Shoppers Encouraged to Support Local Traders at Street Market

Council News & Services, Shopping & Retail

Hailsham Street Market

Hailsham Street Market, a weekly street market selling locally produced items and unique gifts, reopened a few weeks ago, more than three months after closing in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

The COVID-19 outbreak meant that visits to the street market, which operates from 8.30am-1.30pm on every Saturday in Vicarage Field, had to be cancelled due to the introduction of strict social distancing measures.

But as the country takes further steps on the route-map out of lockdown, markets up and down the country have already opened or are making plans to reopen so they can once again showcase local food, craftwork, gifts and other items.

“I’m delighted that the street market is up and running again,” said Deputy Town Clerk & Business Enterprise Manager Mickey Caira. “Safety is of crucial importance so all market stalls are COVID-secure and signs have been put in place on-site, reminding people to continue social distancing and to follow the guidance.  Advice on how to shop safely at the market is also available but I urge residents and visitors to also do their part to keep each other safe.”

“Certainly for a while, there will be a limited number of stalls, but this is expected to increase as more traders reopen for business. Undeniably, economic recovery and growth will be a significant challenge for all businesses but they will be backed by us every step of the way,” added Mr Caira.

Street market organisers Hailsham Town Council has worked hard to bring back the market and have taken steps to ensure that it is safe for shoppers and traders, and operate within the guidelines suggested by government agencies. The street market has a new layout, with social distancing barriers in place where required and queuing systems in place at each stall. Traders are also sanitising their stalls and tables.

“By supporting local producers, growers, suppliers and offering them the opportunity to sell locally – markets are an ideal way of showcasing the diverse range of products available in Hailsham and I’d encourage people to come down to Vicarage Field and support independent trade.”

“We welcome back all returning traders and would like to hear from anyone interested in becoming a market stall trader at Hailsham Street Market.”

PITCH HIRE FOR THE STREET MARKET IS AVAILABLE TO NEW TRADERS. To book a stall please email us for more information and to access the market trader application forms.
