Hailsham Street Market Remains Open During Lockdown

Hailsham Street Market

The Town Council is pleased to announce that Hailsham Street Market will remain open for shoppers during the lockdown, although only essential retail items such as food will be sold while such restrictions are in place.

Hailsham Street Market, which takes place in Vicarage Field on Saturdays from 8.30am-1.30pm, will continue to operate, albeit with strict social distancing measures and COVID-protection measures in place.

“I’m delighted that the street market continues to operate throughout the lockdown,” said Deputy Town Clerk & Business Enterprise Manager Mickey Caira. “However, safety is of crucial importance to us, so all market stalls are COVID-secure and signs are in place on-site reminding people to continue social distancing and to follow the latest guidance. Advice on how to shop safely at the market is also available, but I urge residents and visitors to also do their part to keep each other safe.”

Street market organisers Hailsham Town Council worked hard to bring back the market after the initial lockdown last year and has again taken steps to ensure that it remains open during the current lockdown, whilst making it is safe for shoppers and traders – and operates within the guidelines suggested by the Government.

The street market has introduced a COVID-compliant layout, with social distancing barriers in place where required and queuing systems in place at each stall. Traders are also sanitising their stalls and tables.

“By supporting local producers, growers, suppliers and offering them the opportunity to sell locally – markets are an ideal way of showcasing the diverse range of products available in Hailsham and I’d encourage people to come down to Vicarage Field and support independent trade.”

“We welcome back all returning traders and would like to hear from anyone interested in becoming a market stall trader at Hailsham Street Market.”

Traders at Hailsham Street Market will now receive free market pitches until March 2021. The Town Council’s Communities Committee announced at a meeting held last autumn that fees will be waived until March, as part of its commitment to support the town centre and its businesses.

Eligible traders can continue to operate at the market, but this will be kept under review, should the situation change regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and potential changes to restrictions.
