“Checking service was a great facility. Knowledgeable staff too.”
Later this year, Hailsham Town Council will mark the seven-year anniversary of the Post Office – a much-needed town centre facility that first opened in July 2019. Since then, the branch has become an integral part of the High Street, providing essential services and continually evolving to meet the needs of residents and businesses.
Situated at 10 High Street, the Post Office has gone from strength to strength since the Town Council took on the franchise in 2019. During that time, both the range of services offered and the staff team have expanded, helping to ensure improved support for the local community.
“The High Street Post Office is more than just a postal counter – it’s a trusted community hub,” said Cllr Mary Laxton, Chair of the Town Council’s Post Office Committee. “It has provided dependable, face-to-face service in a time when such access is more valuable than ever.”
To meet increasing customer demand, the branch has welcomed new counter clerks in recent months, alongside the appointment of a new branch manager. Their leadership has played a key role in maintaining high customer service standards and supporting the continued growth of the branch.
Several new services have also been introduced in recent months, including:
Western Union money transfers
Evri parcel drop-off and collection services
Enhanced banking services for both personal and business customers
These additions build on the branch’s established offer, which includes everyday banking, bill payments, travel money and passport check-and-send services.
“Our priority has always been to provide a wide range of accessible services under one roof,” added Cllr Laxton. “With more footfall than ever and a great team behind the counter, we’re proud to be serving our community.”
The success of the High Street Post Office has been further strengthened by the introduction of the Hailsham Banking Hub, which began operating from the premises in March last year as an interim arrangement, pending the identification of permanent town centre premises. Banking Hubs operate in a similar way to traditional bank branches, offering face-to-face counter services delivered by staff representing major high street banks on a rotating basis.
Demand for the facility increased significantly following the closure of several local bank branches, including Lloyds and Halifax, both of which closed last year.
“The partnership between the Post Office and the Banking Hub is a real success story,” said Cllr Mary Laxton. “It ensures Hailsham remains a place where people can confidently manage their finances and access reliable services on the High Street.”
Hailsham Town Council has expressed its thanks to the Post Office staff team, partner organisations and customers whose continued support helps sustain this vital town centre service.
Town Clerk and Postmaster John Harrison also praised the ongoing success of the branch. “The post office has gone from strength to strength since reopening in 2019. Nearly seven years later, residents still express their appreciation for the Town Council’s decision to take on the franchise and preserve this important community facility. I would like to thank customers and my colleagues at the post office for their continued support.”
Mr Harrison also highlighted the importance of the banking facilities now available. !The availability of banking services at the post office and the opening of the Hailsham Banking Hub on site last March have been extremely valuable, particularly given the recent closures of local bank branches. The hub will continue to operate from the post office until permanent premises are secured.”
