Hailsham Town Council proudly supported the Royal British Legion Hailsham & District Branch’s special memorial service to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day) this morning [15 August].
The commemorative event took place at the Hailsham War Memorial, at which local councillors joined residents, veterans, families and community groups to remember those who served in the Far East. The service began at 10.45am and was followed by a poignant wreath-laying ceremony.
VJ Day, which marks the surrender of Imperial Japan in 1945, effectively brought an end to the Second World War. While VE Day (Victory in Europe) was celebrated in May 1945, the conflict in the Far East continued for several months. VJ Day serves as a reminder of the enormous sacrifices made by British and Allied forces in the Asia-Pacific region, especially those who suffered as prisoners of war.
The service provided an opportunity for the Hailsham community to come together, reflect and honour the men and women who endured hardship during the war, ensuring their stories and sacrifices were not forgotten.
“VJ Day represents the final chapter of the Second World War and stands as a solemn reminder of the immense cost of global conflict,” said Town Mayor Cllr Chris Bryant. “On the 80th anniversary, we paid tribute not only to those who gave their lives but to the thousands of men and women who fought and endured unimaginable conditions in the Pacific and Southeast Asia.”
“It’s our responsibility to ensure future generations understand the importance of VJ Day and the enduring legacy of those who served. I was deeply moved by the good turnout of attendees at the service.”
Deputy Mayor Cllr Colin Mitchell, who attended the service alongside the Town Mayor, commented: “VJ Day is an important occasion for remembering the hundreds of thousands of British and Commonwealth personnel who served in the Far East, including around 30,000 British troops who were taken prisoner. It is also a time to reflect on the resilience and sacrifices made by those who fought in the Pacific War.”
“This 80th anniversary offered a significant moment for reflection – to remember not only those who lost their lives but also to reaffirm our collective commitment to peace and unity, and to honour those who served under the most extreme conditions.”
