Hailsham Delegation to Renew Twinning Charter with Gournay-en-Bray

Hailsham Town Council is looking forward to strengthening its long-standing links with the French town of Gournay-en-Bray this October, when town councillors and members of the Hailsham & District Twinning Association will officially renew the Twinning Charter.

The re-signing marks the latest chapter in a partnership that has flourished for more than 25 years. Hailsham’s twinning relationship with Gournay-en-Bray was formally established in October 2000, when the original Twinning Charter was signed in Hailsham. The agreement was renewed in 2011 and, following the celebration of the partnership’s 25th anniversary last year, representatives from both communities will come together once again to reaffirm their commitment to international friendship and cooperation.

Since its formation, the twinning arrangement has fostered lasting friendships and encouraged cultural exchange between the two towns. The Hailsham & District Twinning Association has organised numerous visits, exchanges and activities over the years, giving residents the opportunity to experience French culture while welcoming visitors from Gournay-en-Bray to Hailsham.

Events have included sightseeing visits, carnivals, music and choral festivals, sporting activities and social gatherings. Members also enjoy a varied programme of local events throughout the year, including quizzes, cream teas, picnics and cycling trips.

The Mayor of Hailsham, Councillor Chris Bryant, said: “Our twinning relationship with Gournay-en-Bray is something the town can be very proud of. For more than two decades it has brought people together, created lasting friendships and strengthened the links between our two communities.”

“I’m delighted that representatives from the Town Council and the Twinning Association will be renewing the Charter this October. It is a fitting way to celebrate the success of the partnership and to reaffirm our shared commitment to maintaining these valuable international ties for future generations.”

Town Clerk John Harrison said: “Town twinning is about much more than ceremonial occasions. It provides opportunities for cultural exchange, mutual understanding and community engagement, while showcasing Hailsham on an international stage.”

Hailsham Town Council is pleased to support the work of the Hailsham & District Twinning Association and encourages anyone interested in learning more about the partnership to consider becoming a member. Membership is open to everyone and costs just £10 per person per year, or £40 for groups. New members are always welcome and can enjoy a varied programme of social events, organised visits and opportunities to meet visitors from Gournay-en-Bray throughout the year.
