The Hailsham Christmas Market which took place in Vicarage Field on Saturday [13 December], served as a community occasion that brought residents and visitors together to enjoy seasonal activities, support local traders and craftspeople and experience the town’s strong community spirit.
A broad range of stalls was available, offering handcrafted gifts, locally produced goods and festive treats for those seeking last-minute Christmas presents. Items on sale at the market included flowers, baked goods, confectionery, clothing and gifts, honey, gift hampers and fudge.
Cllr Anne Marie Ricketts, Chair of the Town Council’s Communities Committee, said: “The Christmas Market enhanced the festive atmosphere in the town centre and reflected the strong sense of community for which Hailsham is known. The event supported local businesses and community organisations, contributed to the local economy and provided enjoyable experiences for people of all ages.”
“We are grateful to council staff, traders and volunteers whose support helped ensure the success of the event.”
Live entertainment took place throughout the day, including performances by The Sussex Stompers and The Jackettes, who presented a lively programme of jazz and vintage-style Christmas music. Santa Claus attended with his sleigh courtesy of Hailsham Rotary Club and Hailsham FM broadcast live from the market.
Alongside the main market, Hailsham Farmers’ Market was held at the Cattle Market site in the morning and offered a selection of locally produced goods. Hailsham FM also supported the event with coverage.
To conclude the day’s activities, Wealden Brass presented a Christmas concert at Hailsham Parish Church in the afternoon, featuring traditional and contemporary seasonal music.
Cllr Ricketts added: “With live music, festive refreshments and a visit from Santa, the event offered something for all. We were pleased to welcome residents and visitors and hope the event was enjoyed by the whole community.”
For 2026, both the Christmas Lights Switch-on and Christmas Market events will be combined. This will allow the Town Council to organise a single, much larger combined event, which will be held on the last Friday in November.
