Final preparations are under way for a string of events taking place in the Hailsham over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

In conjunction with the national celebrations to mark the milestone, plans are currently being drawn up by Hailsham News on behalf of the Town Council for a programme of events and entertainment taking place in the town centre from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. Funded by the Town Council, the events will involve thousands of residents, local community groups, charities and schools.

On the first day of the celebrations, Thursday 2nd June, the High Street will be closed to all traffic from 5pm, and residents are welcome to join in with the occasion from 7pm to witness the lighting of the official beacon later on in the evening (9.45pm). Beforehand, drumming group Stix and the Wealden Brass Band will be entertaining visitors with patriotic music, and Hailsham Voices, a local community choir, will also be performing. The special lighting ceremony will begin at 9.35pm to coincide with the celebrations nationwide.

On Saturday 4th June, the Town Council is organising a ‘Hailsham Jubilee Day’ shopping event – similar to the ‘Celebrate Hailsham Day’ events organised in recent years – whereby town centre shops, eateries and service providers will be participating in the event by offering special discounts and promotions on their goods/services to customers on the day.

Hailsham Jubilee Day will also feature a range of market stalls in Vicarage Field, selling a range of locally sourced food and gifts  – plus, Hailsham FM will be in attendance and local community groups will be providing fun activities for all the family.

On the final day of the bank holiday weekend, the Jubilee Family Fun Day will take place on the Western Road Recreation Ground. There will be live music, games, sports, food and drink from 11am-8pm. This is a free event but visitors will need to register for tickets by visiting www.hailsham.news.

Deputy Town Clerk & Business Enterprise Manager Mickey Caira said: “The upcoming bank holiday weekend is set to be an exciting time for our town and the Town Council is delighted to have funded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Hailsham, and organised the Hailsham Jubilee Day in particular, which I’m confident will support our community in all the wonderful things they are doing locally.”

“The Town Council continues to work hard with project partners to make the necessary preparations for town events and is grateful to everyone for their support. I hope that as many people as possible will come along to the various Platinum Jubilee events taking place in the town, so ably being organised by Hailsham News.”

Managing Editor of Hailsham News, Paul Gibson, said: “I feel truly honoured to be playing a part in Hailsham’s official Platinum Jubilee celebrations. We’ve been working really hard to make sure there’s a wide range of activities for residents to join in with and celebrate this landmark occasion in true style. I cannot wait to see Hailsham come together and enjoy a weekend which will be remembered for many years to come.”

Later this summer,  the Town Council is also organising a Summer Market event taking place in Vicarage Field on Saturday 23rd July, which will feature a specialist French market selling continental produce, local and regional cheeses, freshly baked bread, olives and dried fruit, as well as jewellery, accessories and more. Full details will be announced in the coming weeks.
