The Town Council is looking forward to welcoming residents, visitors and traders to the first Hailsham Street Market to be held in Vicarage Field following the market’s return to the town centre.

Taking place on Friday 31st July from 9.30am to 1.30pm, the market marks the beginning of a new chapter for the popular community event, which will now be held in Vicarage Field on the last Friday of each month throughout the market season (March to September).

The Council is encouraging residents to come along and support local traders, while inviting stallholders to book pitches and be part of what promises to be a vibrant and well-attended event in the heart of Hailsham.

Tony Lee, Operations and Facilities Manager at Hailsham Town Council, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing the market back to Vicarage Field and are looking forward to welcoming both returning and new traders on 31st July. Markets play an important role in supporting local businesses, creating a lively atmosphere in the town centre and giving residents the opportunity to shop locally.”

“We already have strong interest from traders in the first market and encourage people to come along and support the event.”

The return to Vicarage Field follows a series of market trials held at Blackman’s Yard last autumn and earlier this year. While the trial events were well received and provided valuable insight into operating the market from an alternative location, feedback gathered from traders, shoppers and local residents indicated strong support for returning the market to its traditional town centre setting.

Following a review of the trial period, the Council concluded that Vicarage Field offers greater visibility, increased footfall and a more central location, helping to maximise opportunities for traders while enhancing the experience for visitors.

Cllr Anne Marie Ricketts, a member of the Council’s Communities Committee, commented: “The Blackman’s Yard trials proved useful and demonstrated that there is strong community support for the market. However, feedback consistently highlighted the benefits of holding the event in Vicarage Field, where it is more accessible and visible to shoppers. We’re excited to see the market return to the heart of Hailsham and hope residents will come along and make the first event a great success.”

The market will continue to showcase a range of local produce, artisan goods, crafts and independent businesses, providing shoppers with an opportunity to discover unique products while supporting the local economy.

Cllr Ricketts added: “Markets have long been an important part of town life, bringing people together and creating a welcoming atmosphere. We would encourage local traders to take advantage of this opportunity to showcase their products and connect with customers, and we look forward to seeing the market thrive once again in Vicarage Field.”

Stallholder pitches are available at a cost of £10. For further information or to book a pitch, please contact Hailsham Town Council on 01323 841702 or email markets@hailsham-tc.gov.uk.
