Residents interested in home-grown produce and outdoor recreation were welcomed to the Hailsham Allotment Society’s annual Open Day on Saturday [13 June], which highlighted the thriving allotment community at the Battle Road site.
The event attracted visitors keen to explore allotment gardening, view a wide range of fruit and vegetable crops, and learn more about the opportunities available to local residents. Among those in attendance were Hailsham Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Colin Mitchell, representatives from the Hailsham Horticultural Society and members of several local community organisations.
Throughout the day, allotment holders opened their plots to visitors, offering advice on cultivation techniques, sharing their experiences and demonstrating the variety of produce grown across the site. The event also aimed to encourage greater awareness of the benefits that allotment gardening can bring to individuals and the wider community.
Councillor Mitchell praised the dedication of plot holders and the welcoming atmosphere created during the event. He said: “It was encouraging to see so many people taking an interest in allotment gardening and the positive impact it can have on both wellbeing and community life.”
“The enthusiasm and knowledge shared by plot holders throughout the day was inspiring, and events like this help demonstrate how allotments provide valuable opportunities for people of all ages to learn new skills, spend time outdoors and connect with others.”
Terry Miller, Secretary of the Hailsham Allotment Society, said: “The open day proved very successful and attracted a steady stream of visitors. Plot holders were delighted to showcase their gardens and discuss the different crops they grow throughout the year. As always, the refreshments were extremely popular and helped create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.”
The Town Council currently manages 97 allotment plots across three sites:
Plots are available in two standard sizes: 3 rods or 5 rods. Annual rental costs are £24 for a 3-rod plot and £41 for a 5-rod plot. New tenants are asked to pay a £50 refundable deposit, returned when the plot is vacated in a satisfactory condition.
