Grant De Jongh Joins 100th Birthday Celebrations at Local Care Home

A local care home resident celebrated her 100th birthday in style with friends, family and the Deputy Mayor of Hailsham today [18 September].

Margaret Luery of Marshview Care Home in Marshfoot Lane marked her birthday with a gathering at which relatives, well-wishers and guests of honour including the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Grant De Jongh, gathered to celebrate the special occasion.

Born in Lanark in September 1918, Mrs Luery worked as a theatre sister at the Edinburgh Royal Hospital and was also a midwife. Having moved into Marshview in August 2014, Margaret is a very keen artist, enjoying both painting and drawing.

She has a daughter Fiona and a son Douglas and is very proud of her grandaughter Ruth.

Sam Murphy, executive manager at Marshview Care Home said: “Margaret is a truly lovely lady. She is so appreciative of everything that the staff do, has a beautiful smile that can light up the room and is always considerate of others. She loves to read and has lots of knowledge. Margaret does like to have a good chat.”

Deputy Mayor Councillor De Jongh, delighted to have been invited to the celebrations wished Mrs Luery good health for the future. He said: “It’s wonderful to hear of someone remaining so active at such an age and it’s an honour to celebrate with Margaret and other guests on her 100th birthday.”

“She is a lovely lady and a pleasure to be around. Margaret certainly does not look her age and I hope she enjoys many more birthday parties to come.”

Councillor De Jongh also commended care home staff for their outstanding commitment to their residents. “Marshview is a high-quality place of residence for elderly people and I rather get the feeling that everyone here is happy which is good news all round!”
