Subject to relevant permissions and licences, the Town Council has agreed to proceed with plans to establish a dedicated pet cemetery within Hailsham Cemetery in Ersham Road next year.
The Council has undertaken research into the provision of such a facility, noting that the nearest available location for the interment of domestic pet ashes in a designated remembrance area is currently in Ringmer near Lewes.
The proposed site is a currently unused section of land near the main entrance to Hailsham Cemetery. Subject to permissions, the area will be refurbished to create an attractive and well-maintained resting place for small domestic pets such as cats and dogs.
Individual plots, measuring approximately 12 inches by 12 inches, will be hand-dug by Council cemetery staff. A surrounding fence and gate will be installed to clearly define the pet cemetery area. As part of the service, for a set fee, the Council will provide:
Anyone who wishes to add a plaque may do so at their own expense, and it must not exceed the maximum permitted size.
In addition, the area will be landscaped to a high standard, including the planting of two trees, the installation of benches and a gravel finish in keeping with the existing memorial gardens at the cemetery. No other paraphernalia will be permitted within the site to ensure a respectful and uniform appearance.
It is estimated that the site will accommodate between 100 and 200 plots, subject to future underground services checks.
“For many people pets are beloved members of the family, and their passing can be deeply felt,” said Cllr Mary Laxton, Chair of the Assets Management Committee. “This project seeks to provide a dignified, local place where residents can lay their pets to rest and remember them in peaceful surroundings.”
“The concept has been carefully considered to ensure the area is respectful, attractively landscaped and well-maintained, giving families a special place to visit for years to come. By providing this service locally, we are also helping residents avoid the difficulty and cost of travelling further afield to facilities outside Hailsham.”
“It is our hope that, if the relevant permissions are granted, the pet cemetery will offer comfort and solace to those experiencing the loss of a cherished companion.”
