The latest phase of improvement works at Hailsham Common Pond in Bellbanks Road has now been completed, with further sections of the perimeter footpath – including the Maryan Alcove – overlaid with tarmac.

Funded through the Town Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), the project builds on earlier resurfacing work around the pond, enhancing safety for visitors while providing smoother, more accessible routes for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility.

This milestone forms part of a broader programme of ongoing improvements across the site. Recent works have included the clearing, reinstatement and replanting of land surrounding the pond, helping to improve both the appearance and environmental quality of the area.

Additional upgrades carried out in recent months include the installation of a new overflow pipe, alongside restoration work to areas affected by machinery and trenching. These sections were reinstated using six tonnes of topsoil and approximately 8kg of grass seed.

The muddy grassed area behind the Maryan Alcove – previously churned up by geese – has also been restored as part of the Council’s continuing maintenance programme.

These efforts follow significant works undertaken last spring, including the removal of dead trees, clearance of overgrown vegetation and general tidying of the pond’s two islands, all contributing to a wider, long-term enhancement project at the Common Pond.

With strong support and positive feedback from the public, many improvements have been successfully delivered in recent years, supported by the regular maintenance and monitoring carried out by Town Council staff.

Cllr Mary Laxton, Chair of the Assets Management Committee commented: “It’s always nice to receive positive feedback from people on the work undertaken by outdoor works staff at the Common Pond site and we look forward to the continuation of our work to maintain the area in the future, allowing pond life to flourish and ensuring residents and visitors can continue to enjoy this local beauty spot.”

Cllr Laxton also paid tribute to Pond Warden Phil Hobden, who was formally recognised in December last year for over 30 years of outstanding service to the community. He was presented with a Certificate of Long Service and a commemorative gift to mark three decades of dedicated work.

Mr Hobden has served as Pond Warden since 1992, carrying out essential duties to protect the environmental health, safety and long-term sustainability of one of Hailsham’s most valued natural spaces. His role includes routine maintenance, wildlife monitoring, community engagement and supporting conservation initiatives across the site.

Reflecting on his milestone, Phil Hobden said: “I’ve always taken great pride in looking after the Common Pond and ensuring it remains a place the whole community can enjoy. It’s been a privilege to work here for so many years, and I’m grateful for the recognition. I look forward to continuing the work we’ve started and supporting the pond’s future.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the Common Pond to see the improvements for themselves and enjoy a green space that continues to be carefully preserved for the benefit of the community.
