Hailsham’s annual Christmas Lights Switch-On event held on Friday [28th November] has been hailed a resounding success, drawing large crowds and spreading festive cheer throughout the town. The event, which marked the official start of the Christmas season in Hailsham, was filled with community spirit, entertainment and plenty of seasonal shopping.
Held from 2pm, the event transformed Vicarage Field and the High Street into a bustling Christmas market, featuring an impressive array of local traders offering everything from festive gifts and homemade treats to seasonal decorations. The market was a big hit with visitors, who were treated to mulled wine, freshly made waffles, homemade bakes, artisan gifts and much more.
Over 20 local traders participated, including the Waffle Wagon, Misty Acres, Cinnabun and Sister’s Sweets ‘n’ Sips, as well as community organisations such as Hailsham Lions and Demelza Hospice Care for Children. The market offered a perfect mix of food, drink, crafts and unique gifts, making it the ideal place to find something special for the festive season.
Entertainment throughout the day included a carol performance by the Hailsham Choral Society, followed by students from Hailsham Academy showcasing their singing talents. The event also featured a special visit from Santa Claus, courtesy of Hailsham Rotary Club, who handed out sweets to children.
The main event took place at 6pm with the official Christmas Lights Switch-On, during which the town’s festive lighting was activated along the High Street. Following the switch-on, Hailsham FM continued its live broadcast, providing Christmas music throughout the remainder of the event.
After the lights were illuminated, Hailsham Parish Church invited visitors inside and offered complimentary hot chocolate.
“We are absolutely thrilled with how the event went this year,” said Cllr Anne Marie Ricketts, Chair of the Town Council’s Communities Committee. “It was wonderful to see so many families, residents and visitors coming together to celebrate the start of the Christmas season. The event was a joyful celebration, and we’re grateful to all the traders, volunteers and local organisations who made this event such a success.”
The event also benefited from a temporary road closure on Hailsham High Street, ensuring the safety of attendees and allowing everyone to enjoy the festivities without disruption.
Cllr Ricketts added, “The Christmas Lights Switch-On is one of Hailsham’s signature events, and each year it continues to grow in popularity. We look forward to making next year’s celebration even bigger and better. Thank you to everyone who attended – and to the incredible team of staff, volunteers and partners who made the event possible.”
“Thanks must also be entended to the Hailsham Bonfire Society, whose volunteer team helped with marshalling the rioad closure in place on the day.”
