Hailsham Residents Encouraged to Consider Volunteering in 2026

Community

The Chair of Hailsham Town Council’s Communities Committee, Councillor Anne Marie Ricketts, is encouraging residents to consider volunteering within Hailsham and the surrounding area during 2026.

Volunteering provides an important opportunity for individuals to support their local community, assist those in need and contribute to causes that make a positive difference. Across Hailsham, many residents already volunteer their time and have found that even a small commitment – whether an hour a week or a more regular involvement – can be both rewarding and enriching. As well as helping others, volunteering offers opportunities to meet new people, develop skills and gain valuable experience.

Councillor Ricketts emphasised the essential role volunteers play in supporting a wide range of organisations locally, noting that additional help can have a significant impact: “The community and voluntary sector is a vital part of life in Hailsham, delivering a wide range of services and activities that benefit residents of all ages. A strong and active voluntary sector brings many benefits to the town, from supporting vulnerable people and helping individuals develop life skills, to offering opportunities for social engagement and leisure.”

“Hailsham’s charities, community interest companies and voluntary groups are always keen to welcome new volunteers who are willing to share their time and talents. Whether you are able to help occasionally or more regularly, your contribution can make a real difference.”

Councillor Ricketts highlighted that volunteering opportunities are open to people from all backgrounds, regardless of the amount of time they can commit: “It does not matter if you can only spare a few hours from time to time, are retired or semi-retired with greater availability, or have experience that could support organisations at trustee level. Whatever your skills or circumstances, your contribution will be both needed and greatly appreciated. Every volunteer makes a difference.”

She added: “Many local organisations and services depend on volunteers to deliver essential activities within the town. I would encourage residents to explore the wide range of opportunities available by visiting the Town Council website or the Hailsham Volunteer Hub, where current volunteering roles are listed.”

Reflecting on her own experience, Councillor Ricketts said: “Having volunteered extensively within the local community over the years, I have seen first-hand the dedication and commitment shown by volunteers who support our charities and community organisations. There are many unsung heroes whose efforts are fundamental to the success of fundraising events and the delivery of vital services across Hailsham.”

She noted that organisations such as the Royal British Legion Hailsham branch, Hailsham Foodbank, Pass It On (In Your Community) CIC, Environment Hailsham, Hailsham Lions and Rotary Clubs, Cuckmere Buses, the Charles Hunt Centre, local charity shops and the Hailsham Festival Committee all rely heavily on volunteer support, among many others serving the community.

Councillor Ricketts also drew attention to a specific volunteering opportunity at the Railway Club, a weekly social group for older residents held on Wednesdays at the Station Youth Centre in Western Road. The club, which celebrates its first anniversary this month, is seeking volunteers to help support its continued success.

Open to residents aged 55 and over who may be experiencing social isolation, the Railway Club offers a friendly environment where people can socialise, take part in activities and build new friendships. Volunteer roles involve supporting the three-hour weekly sessions, welcoming attendees, engaging with visitors and assisting with games and activities.

Anyone interested in volunteering to support the Railway Club is invited to contact Councillor Ricketts directly by email at cllr.annemarie.ricketts@hailsham-tc.gov.uk.

Residents wishing to volunteer more generally can find further information, along with a list of current opportunities and local organisations, via the Hailsham Volunteer Hub website.
