With just three weeks to go until the Hailsham Community Run on Sunday 17 May, excitement is building across the town – and residents are being urged not only to sign up, but to come out of their houses along the route and line the streets to encourage the runners.
Now in its fourth year, the run has quickly become one of Hailsham’s most anticipated annual events, attracting increasing numbers of participants each time. But organisers say the success of the day depends just as much on those watching as those taking part. Spectators are being encouraged to come out in force, cheer runners along the route and create an atmosphere that lifts every participant over the finish line.
The past two events sold out ahead of schedule due to overwhelming demand, and a similar response is expected again this year. Those who have yet to register are strongly advised to sign up as soon as possible to guarantee their place.
The event is open to all, with a range of distances designed to suit every level of ability – from experienced runners to first-timers and walkers. Families, friends and community groups are all invited to get involved, whether by taking part or by cheering from the sidelines. Organisers say the encouragement from the crowd plays a huge role in making the day memorable for everyone involved.
Registration remains open online, with places continuing to be snapped up quickly:

The Community Run continues to thrive thanks to strong local backing. Hailsham Town Council has contributed £6,000 towards this year’s event, helping to fund essential elements such as medals, accessibility measures, signage and volunteer support. A wide range of local businesses are also supporting the run through sponsorship and involvement, helping to ensure the event’s continued growth.
The day itself is being delivered in partnership with Sport Systems Ltd, who will manage the technical side of the race to ensure a safe and smooth experience for all participants.
“At its heart, the Hailsham Community Run is about bringing people together,” said Inclusivity Lead, Karen Nicholls. “Inclusivity remains a key priority, with routes and facilities designed to accommodate a wide range of needs. Whether participants are pushing prams, managing mobility challenges or simply trying something new, the focus is on making everyone feel welcome.”
Organisers say that while participation is important, the energy created by spectators is just as vital. Project Lead Mary Laxton commented: “A strong turnout along the route, whether clapping, cheering and encouraging, can make all the difference, turning the run into a true community celebration rather than simply a race.”
“With momentum building and places expected to sell out again, now is the time to act – whether that means signing up to run or planning where to stand and cheer. On 17 May, Hailsham won’t just be hosting a race; it will be putting on a show of community spirit, powered by the voices and support of the people lining its streets.”
Project Co-organiser Colin Mitchell added: “What makes the Hailsham Community Run so special isn’t just the runners, it’s the people who come out to support them. When you’ve got crowds cheering from start to finish, it creates an atmosphere that really lifts everyone taking part. We’d love to see as many residents as possible lining the route this year and helping turn it into a real celebration for the whole town.”
Residents should also be aware of road closures on the day. Hailsham High Street will be closed from 9am to 1pm, with no on-street parking available during that time. Long-stay parking is available in South Road, Victoria Road and Vicarage Lane.
Rolling road closures will also be in place around the town centre, managed by volunteers from the Hailsham Bonfire Society. These measures are necessary to ensure the safety of participants – and organisers hope they will also encourage more people to step outside and enjoy the spectacle.
