The Town Council is urging residents and people thinking about moving to Hailsham to take part in a Housing Needs Survey, a consultation which will play an important role in shaping future housing and development in the town.
Wealden District Council is currently preparing a new Local Plan which will guide growth and development across the district over the next 15 years in response to population, housing and economic change. A draft Local Plan is expected to be published for consultation in Spring 2026 and it is anticipated that Hailsham will again be identified as a major location for growth.
At the same time, Hailsham Town Council is updating its Neighbourhood Plan and consultation on this work is already underway. It aims to ensure that development reflects local housing needs, protects the character of the town and is supported by appropriate infrastructure.
To help strengthen its response to the emerging Local Plan and to inform policies within the Neighbourhood Plan, the Town Council has launched a Housing Needs Survey for Hailsham and is inviting residents to share their views.

Commenting on the survey, Cllr Mary Laxton, Chair of the Neighbourhood Planning Committee, said: “Decisions about housing have long term impacts on our town and it is important that those decisions are informed by the experiences and needs of local people. By taking part in this survey, residents can help ensure that future housing in Hailsham better reflects local circumstances and supports a balanced and sustainable community.”
“The information gathered will strengthen our evidence when engaging with the Local Plan process and when shaping policies in the Neighbourhood Plan, helping the Town Council to speak up clearly and confidently on behalf of Hailsham.”
Residents are strongly encouraged to take part in the survey. The more responses received, the stronger the evidence base will be when the Town Council makes representations on behalf of the community. All responses will be anonymised and personal information will remain confidential.
Residents who need a paper copy of the survey can contact Hailsham Town Council on 01323 841702 or by email at enquiries@hailsham-tc.gov.uk.
