Town councillors attended Hailsham FM’s official opening ceremony to launch with Ofcom on Saturday [26 May].
Hailsham FM took over part of the Cortlandt stable block building in North Street in January, a building formerly occupied by the Hailsham Works! youth employment training scheme which was brought back to life after Hailsham Town Council agreed to lease it to the community radio station.
Hailsham FM has been in existence for over 4 years now, currently on air live from 4pm to 11pm Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday – online via their website or via TuneIn!.
The station was granted a licence by Ofcom to broadcast full-time on FM as a ‘Community’ radio station, run entirely voluntarily by local people, and the transmitter was officially ‘switched on’ on Saturday.
Councillor Grant de Jongh, who was recently elected Deputy Mayor of Hailsham, officially opened the station during a live interview. Councillor De Jongh said: “I am so pleased that we have our own local radio station and we should all feel proud as residents and stakeholders to have our own FM radio station. I am excited about its future and the sense of community it will bring.”
“95.9FM is the frequency we should all support as locals.”
Cllr Amanda O’Rawe, the immediate past Deputy Mayor commented: “Hailsham FM has done a fantastic job within the local community since its launch and I’m pleased that we are able to accommodate them, so they can continue their important work in the future.”
“The Cortland stable building in North Street is not being used so this makes perfect sense for the radio station to be based there. Hailsham FM is at the heart of the community and the Town Council looks forward to developing its relationship with the station and engaging even further with the wider community itself through this medium.”
