Square Youth Cafe

A new-look Square Youth Café, operated by Hailsham Youth Service, has reopened following a 4-day redecoration and refurbishment project.

The interior of the popular venue for young people in Market Square, managed and funded by the Town Council, has been repainted and now looks much brighter following the transformation.

“We want to celebrate all of the changes that have been happening recently to Hailsham Youth Service, including the redecoration of The Square,” said Andy Joyes, Youth Project Coordinator at the Town Council.

“The redecoration work has transformed the centre and we’re very impressed with the finished product. We hope that people who currently don’t visit the youth cafe can come and see how good it looks now, how inviting it is and what goes on at The Square.”

Young people aged 11 to 13 (Years 7-8) can enjoy a range of activities on weekday afternoons (Monday to Wednesday and Friday) at the Square Youth Café from 3.15pm to 5pm. Entry is free.

Café evening sessions are also free to enter, catering for young people aged 13 to 17 (Years 9-12) and take place Monday to Friday from 6.45pm to 9pm.

Activities taking place at The Square include pool, table football and console/video games, as well as cooking sessions where young people can learn how to prepare food recipes. Computers and free wi-fi are also available.

Additionally, a variety of outings are organised on a regular basis as part of the Friday Night Project (FNP).

Town Mayor Cllr Nigel Coltman said young people have been happy with the wide range of activities available via Hailsham Youth Service in recent years, many of which were keenly anticipated: “The Square Youth Café aims to provide a safe environment for young people regardless of background, gender or culture. All activities are supervised by staff members to ensure their safety and well-being at all times.”

“Parents can be confident that The Square provides a safe environment for our local young people, giving them a place to socialise in the evenings and during school holidays by organising trips away and various other leisure activities.”
