Young people from the Square Youth Café who took part in a sponsored walk on Tuesday [27th October] managed to raise over £1,000 for Hailsham-based charity, the Quicken Trust.
15 walkers set out for the 16-mile walk which commenced at Hastings pier at 9am and finished at Eastbourne pier in the late afternoon.
All proceeds from the walk will go towards project work in the Ugandan village of Kabubbu next year, where young people from the Square Youth Cafe will be taking part in community development projects involving orphan children, families and schools within the village.
The Square Youth Café, owned and managed by Hailsham Town Council, has already raised thousands of pounds for the Quicken Trust in recent years, having organised and participated in a number of fundraising events. It is hoping to add to the total with the forthcoming sponsored walk and various other fundraising activities in the coming months.
Hailsham Town Council’s youth project coordinator, Andy Joyes, is delighted with the outcome of the walk: “The sponsored walk was an ideal opportunity for members of the public to give generously and help raise awareness for the plight of the orphaned children of Kabubbu.”
“Over 5% of the children in Uganda are impoverished and living without a future. It is important to support the work of the Quicken Trust, who do so much for the orphans in the isolated village of Kabubbu and, through such fundraisers as this, we intend to make a real difference to the lives of the Ugandan orphans again this year.”
“The fundraising towards Kabubbu is already benefitting Hailsham young people from The Square, realising the need and thinking about other people at home and abroad.”
“I think that we have done really well, and I am extremely grateful to everyone who has sponsored us so generously, as well as Hailsham Town Council and Roland Dunn Property Rentals for their continued support.”
