Hailsham Street Market has received additional funding support from the Town Council, which will be used to carry out an in-depth review of the performance of the market in the future.
As part of Hailsham Forward’s ongoing town centre regeneration initiative, an independent review of the market currently operating weekly on Saturdays in Vicarage Field, is now being undertaken to consider appropriate proposals for improvement or change.
The review will involve a detailed assessment of the market, including consultations with market traders.
“Regular markets are a vital component of town centres, especially in market towns such as Hailsham,” said Cllr Amanda O’Rawe, Deputy Town Mayor and Chairman of the Town Council’s Communities Committee.
“Street markets not only bring customers into the town but offer excellent business opportunities to traders and have an important role to play in maintaining the vibrancy of town centres.”
“The advisor we have commissioned to carry out the review of the street market will engage in research locally through shopper and market trader consultation. This will help to identify the ways in which the market’s performance can be improved further and learn fresh ideas about what could be successfully incorporated into, or applied to, the existing market set-up in order to maximise its success.”
Deputy Town Clerk and Business Enterprise Manager Mickey Caira commented “Hailsham Street Market is held in the town centre every Saturday and enjoys a good range of stalls, despite a reduction in the number of stallholders trading there of late.”
“To ensure the long term survival of Hailsham Street Market, it must be financially viable, attractive for traders and appealing to customers and the review will allow a thorough assessment of the market to be conducted to help establish what could be done to revitalise its performance.”
“Hailsham is renowned as a traditional market town and we hope people will continue to support independent local producers and suppliers by attending the weekly street market.”
Hailsham Street Market organisers would like to hear from anyone interested in becoming a stallholder/trader. For further information or to book a stall please call 01323 841702 or email streetmarket@hailshamforward.co.uk.
As an incentive, new traders will be able to set up pitch and trade at the market free of charge at the first market attended.
