Hailsham Town Council is pleased to announce that work on the fitting out of the town’s new Post Office, located at 10 High Street, has been completed and the premises are scheduled to open to the public at 1pm next Monday [24 June].
In setting its budget last year, the Town Council agreed to take over the Post Office if other franchise applications were unsuccessful, in order to protect the service and the staff.
The Town Council has worked with the Post Office on the franchise application, which was delayed due to the withdrawal from the process by the applicant who was originally awarded the franchise. As the process was restarted, the Town Council wishes to express its gratitude to residents for their patience in recent months as the franchise application is not an easy process and indeed took some time.
“The post office is an essential component of our community, and indeed any local community,” said Town Clerk John Harrison. “By agreeing to apply for the franchise and take over day-to-day operations of the new premises, your Town Council has ensured that our local post office is safeguarded and has a sustainable future for residents and local businesses.”
Town Mayor Councillor Paul Holbrook said: “It’s not commonplace for a town or parish council to take over the running of local post offices. Nevertheless, by taking the post office project on, we can ensure that this vital service in the local community continues successfully – every town deserves to have sufficient post office facilities.”
“I would like to thank all the officers involved with making this happen, in particular the Town Clerk, as well as all our town councillors who supported taking on the post office, its staff and responsibilities.”
The post office openings hours will be Monday to Saturday, 9am-5.30pm (closed on Sundays).
There will be four serving positions: two full-screened and two open plan serving positions along the retail counter.
