New Home for Hailsham’s Community Radio Station

Hailsham FM in new premises

A building formerly occupied by the Hailsham Works! youth employment training scheme has been brought back to life after Hailsham Town Council agreed to lease it to a well-known community organisation.

Hailsham FM has taken over part of the Cortlandt stable block building in North Street, after spending several months looking for a new home.

Hailsham FM has been in existence for over 4 years now, currently on air live from 4pm to 11pm Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday – online via their website or via TuneIn!.

The station was granted a licence by Ofcom to broadcast full-time on FM as a ‘Community’ radio station, run entirely voluntarily by local people and consequently needed to vacate its former premises at the Old Court House in Hailsham High Street.

The terms of the Ofcom licence require that Hailsham FM broadcasts for a term of 5 years, past which it will be expected to re-apply for a new licence.

Delighted to have moved to its new premises in North Street, Hailsham FM presenter Simon Herbert said: “For some time now, Hailsham FM has worked closely with the Town Council on large scale events in the town including the summer event markets and Christmas celebrations, providing their PA and presentation services free of charge to enhance the atmosphere of events and attract more people to attend.”

“Feedback has always been positive, and Hailsham FM aims to develop its relationship with the Town Council by providing recorded public service announcements, updates on local works and to act as a forum for public feedback on matters of local concern.”

“We’re grateful to the Town Council for allowing us to use the Cortlandt stable block building in North Street, which is an ideal site for the radio station given its central location in the town, accessibility and the internal space available. This in turn will enable us to set up more working studios and use additional office space for administration and training purposes.”

Town Clerk John Harrison commented: “Hailsham FM has done a fantastic job within the local community since its launch and I’m pleased that we are able to accommodate them, so they can continue their important work in the future.”

“The Cortlandt stable building in North Street is not being used so this makes perfect sense for the radio station to be based there. Hailsham FM is at the heart of the community and the Town Council looks forward to developing its relationship with the station and engaging even further with the wider community itself through this medium.”
