Nearly 20 plots have been allocated to Hailsham residents at the Town Council’s new allotment site in Harold Avenue.
Plans for the new allotment site were given the thumbs up by the Town Council several years ago, resulting from an offer by developer Redrow Homes of an allotment site within their development for 128 dwellings on the land east of Battle Road.
The new allotment site contains 23 small plots. Tenants began taking up these plots in September and the majority of new plots have already been allocated to people who were already on the waiting list.
Councillor Richard Grocock, chairman of the Strategic Projects Committee, said: “The Town Council is committed to providing allotment plots to all residents who wish to rent one and the opening of the new plots in Harold Avenue should help reduce the Town Council’s allotment tenancy waiting list.”
“We recognise the vital role allotment gardening plays in the local community, for people to grow their own selection of fruit and vegetables whilst serving as a highly rewarding pastime in the process.”
At present, the Town Council manages 96 plots on three sites in Hailsham: Battle Road (59 plots), Station Road/Common Pond (14 plots) and Harold Avenue (23 plots).
