Hailsham Youth Council Are Recruiting Again!

Get involved! That’s the message Hailsham Town Council is giving out to young people as part of its latest drive to recruit new Youth Council members.

Young people aged 11 to 17 / years 7-12 (17 to 21 years for those with special needs) who live or go to school in Hailsham are being asked to consider joining Hailsham Youth Council.

Launched in September 2009, Hailsham Youth Council works in partnership with local authorities, schools, voluntary organisations, youth clubs and other community-focused organisations. It aims to represent young people in Hailsham and surrounding villages, ensure that they have their say on what goes on in the town and give them the opportunity to influence key decisions.

The Youth Council has organised a number of events in the past two years including a day trip to the Houses of Parliament, and has recently worked tirelessly on an active campaign to seek funding and planning permission for the construction of an outdoor gym in Hailsham.

Andy Joyes, youth project coordinator at Hailsham Town Council, said: “The Youth Council allows you to speak freely about issues for young people within the Hailsham area and if there is something you think that needs to be addressed in the town that affects you, this is the place to do so.”

“Your role as Youth Councillor will be a highly rewarding experience as not only will you able to make a difference to the lives of other young people in the area, but you can learn new skills, gain more confidence, and be involved in lots of exciting projects in aid of young people in the community.”

Hailsham Youth Council meets fortnightly on Friday afternoons on an informal basis at the Town Council Offices in Market Street. Members may occasionally be asked to attend formal Town Council meetings to discuss some issues or provide updates on project activities.

Anyone interested in becoming a member should contact Andy Joyes on 01323 841702 or send an email to andy.joyes@hailsham-tc.gov.uk.
