Hailsham has taken the ambitious step of entering this year’s Great British High Street Awards under the ‘Rising Star’ category.

The Town Council agreed to the proposal to enter Hailsham into this year’s competition, given the recent adoption of the Council’s Strategic Plan and the progress being made on delivering its aims so far, together with the recent and ongoing town revitalisation initiatives carried out by project partner Hailsham Forward CIC.

“This is the ideal time to enter Hailsham into the competition,” said Town Clerk John Harrison. “A considerable amount of work is being undertaken by the Town Council and its partners to help ensure Hailsham town centre has a successful future and this Rising Star High Street Award is a good opportunity for us to demonstrate our town revitalisation achievements so far.”

The Great British High Street (GBHS) Awards 2018, which is being run by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, is celebrating local achievements on the country’s high streets and supporting the communities in which we all live and work.

High streets are eligible to win up to £10,000 for their local community, plus the opportunity for their local businesses and consumers to participate in a Visa GBHS Spend & Win Competition, which rewards the people that make our high streets so special.

Winners will be named in each of the four UK nations – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – across two categories: Champion High Street and Rising Star High Street, of which the Town Council has entered Hailsham into the latter.

The Rising Star High Street category recognises the nation’s most ambitious high streets, which are taking the lead and working together to revive, adapt and diversify.

Shortlisted finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony in London in November celebrating the high streets that are succeeding and influencing change.

Deputy Town Clerk & Business Enterprise Manager, Mickey Caira commented: “I’m delighted that Hailsham has entered this year’s Great British High Street Rising Star Awards, as it is a town full of community spirit and we have been working in recent years to enhance the economic and commercial vitality of our town centre.”

“Our high street is an essential part of our community and makes an important contribution to the local economy, giving people the opportunity to shop and buy services locally in a good variety of both independent and national chain retailers.”

“Entering this competition is great news for Hailsham and we hope that with everyone’s support we can do well!”
