Hailsham Country Park Car Park Resurfacing Complete

Resurfacing work at the Hailsham Country Park car park has been completed in a bid to make the site more disabled friendly.

The Town Council has been working with The British Disabled Angling Association to create easier access for disabled users at the Country Park lake and, in response to the ‘Walk and Talk Access’ audit carried out by the Association, the car park accessed via Gleneagles Close has been re-surfaced, replacing the original surface which was showing signs of deterioration with new tarmac.

The work undertaken, combined with the removal of hedges and marking of vehicle parking spaces has created some additional car parking spaces on the site.

In addition, the tree canopy at the entrance to the car park has been cut back to prevent damage to vehicles carrying wheelchairs in roof boxes or wheelchair accessible vans.

Designated parking bays have been introduced with appropriate markings to prevent disabled visitors being obstructed by other visitors.

Safety fencing will be installed soon, and work will be undertaken to renew the pathways from the car park to the disabled fishing area.

The Town Council is hoping to gain further funding in the future to continue to improve facilities for disabled users at Hailsham Country Park.

Councillor Richard Grocock, chairman of the Strategic Projects Committee, said: “The existing surface of the car park had deteriorated to a point that it was fairly uneven and held a lot of water following rainfall. Park users, including those who are disabled, have been asking for improvements to the car park and the new surface, with designated disabled parking bays, will be much smoother.”

The Town Council-maintained Country Park covers approximately 22 acres and incorporates woodland, a recreational grass area, two ponds and a lake. A water course skirts the open field area and all-weather footpaths can be found throughout the park to encourage people of all ages to enjoy this precious open space area.
