Town Council officials in Hailsham have issued an appeal for information after vandals defaced damaged a section of the wet pour surface at the children’s play area located on Western Road.

It is believed that the damage, which involved the cutting up of the top layer of a large section of the wet pour safety surface, took place late on Saturday [9 July] and was discovered by a member of the Town Council’s works staff this morning. The vandalism has resulted in significant damage to the safety surface, which will be repaired as soon as possible.

The incident has been reported to the police and an appeal for information published on the Town Council’s social media pages. The Town Council is urging anyone with information about who may be responsible for causing this act of vandalism to contact the police immediately by calling 101 and quoting the crime number 47220126261.

“We are appalled by the vandalism at the Western Road play area site,” said Town Clerk John Harrison. “This is vandalism on a facility used daily by our community and is unacceptable anti-social behaviour.”

“A lot of money and time goes into maintaining our play areas and providing these much-needed facilities for the local community so, if anyone has any information regarding the damage to the wet pour surface or witnessed any behaviour on site that looked suspicious, please report it to Sussex Police as early as possible.”

The damage to the wet pour surface follows a recent spate in vandalism to Town Council property, including the splattering of pink paint over children’s play equipment and damage to the team swing at the Western Road play area and graffiti inside the public toilet facility located on North Street.
