Hailsham is 8 miles north of Eastbourne; 24 miles south of Tunbridge Wells; 18 miles west of Hastings; and 14 miles east of the County town of Lewes. London is some 57 miles away.
RoadHailsham is directly reached by road as the A22 from London to Eastbourne passes through the parish where it intersects main roads from Kent and from West Sussex (A27), including the road through Haywards Heath and Horsham to Guildford, and links with roads from the M25 and Midlands.
Bus services link Hailsham with Lewes and Brighton, Uckfield, Polegate and Eastbourne, Battle, Bexhill and Hastings. Express coaches can be boarded for London and various South Coast towns.
The Metrobus 500 service provides a direct, hourly, 24/7 bus route from Hailsham to Gatwick Airport, with departures leaving from the town centre – travelling straight to the Gatwick South Terminal. Concessionary passes are accepted and a maximum adult fare of £3 applies throughout the route. The service, which takes around two hours, was introduced to help local residents, passengers and shift workers to access England’s second largest airport cheaply and effectively.
Cuckmere Buses serves the immediate locality, linking residential areas and neighbouring villages with the town centre shopping facilities. Rail services operate from Eastbourne and Hastings to London, Ashford, Tunbridge Wells, Lewes, Gatwick Airport, and Brighton.
The nearest rail connections to Hailsham are at Polegate station (Eastbourne to Lewes / Brighton / Gatwick / London-Victoria lines) and Battle station (Hastings to Tunbridge Wells / London-Charing Cross line).
Airline services operate from Gatwick Airport (near Crawley) whilst Heathrow Airport is reached via the M23 and M25 motorways.
Sea crossings to Europe operate from nearby Newhaven (to Dieppe), and further (eastwards) along the coast at Folkestone and Dover (to Calais).
