Hundreds of people attended a special Food & Drink Market in the town centre on Saturday [30 July], an event organised by Hailsham Town Council in partnership with Hailsham Forward.

Vicarage Field took on a distinctly continental flavour when Italia in Piazza – an authentic Italian market — set up stalls selling traditional food such as cheeses, cured meats, pasta, olive oils, vinegars and regional specialities. All produce was imported directly from producers in Italy.

The market also included the usual street market stalls selling a range of locally sourced food, gifts and accessories.

Historic Hailsham Parish Church was open to welcome visitors and Hailsham FM broadcast the event live.

Deputy Town Mayor and Chairman of the Town Council’s Communities Committee Councillor Amanda O’Rawe said: “The market had a lovely atmosphere with some amazing stalls selling good quality food and drink items. Furthermore, the inclusion of Italian in Piazza in the market set-up demonstrated how our town centre is very much open for business by giving people the opportunity to sample products not normally available to them locally.”

“The success of the Food & Drink Market was down to the hard work of working parties involved in its organisation and, with good feedback received from shoppers and stall-holders, we’ll definitely be organising more themed markets like this in the future.”

Town Mayor Councillor Nigel Coltman commented: “The Street Market and its associated special events such as last Saturday’s Food & Drink Market clearly add to the vitality of Hailsham as a market town and more and more of us are realising the importance of supporting our local producers and traders by purchasing items there.”
