Square Youth Cafe Raising Funds For Uganda Project

Young people from the Square Youth Café packed bags for shoppers at Asda in on Saturday [19 March] to help raise funds for Sussex-based charity, the Quicken Trust.

Working from 10am to 4pm and taking only minimum break time, the bags were packed for hundreds of shoppers and a total of £530 was collected on the day.

The money raised will help towards the young people’s trip to Kabubbu in Uganda this October, where they will take part in a building project, agricultural development and helping families within the community, a life-changing volunteer experience for everyone involved.

Hailsham Town Council’s Youth Project Coordinator Andy Joyes said: “The young people from The Square did really well on Saturday and the money will go towards the regeneration of Kabubbu and contribute to improvement in a number of areas including healthcare, shelter, physical welfare and social concern.”

“I would like to thank the management and staff at Asda in Hailsham for their support in allowing the bag pack to take place. I would also like to thank shoppers who agreed for us to pack their bags, and to those who paid us not to!”

The Square Youth Café, owned and operated by Hailsham Town Council, has a long term relationship with the Quicken Trust, a Sussex-based charity which aims to transform the lives of people living in poverty in Kabubbu in terms of healthcare, nutrition, education, welfare and sustainable work projects. The Quicken Trust works in partnership with a range of organisations around the UK and worldwide to achieve this goal.

Young people from ‘The Square’ have visited Kabbubu several times in the past, where they have built a house for a family in need, and cleaned, painted and participated in arts and crafts sessions.

Previous activities included ‘Pier to Pier’ sponsored walks, charity football matches, quiz nights, raffle competitions, table-top sales, leaflet drops and sponsored chest and back wax. The Square Youth Café has raised around £4,000 of its £5,600target for the October trip to Kabubbu so far.
