HAILSHAM'S TWIN TOWN HONOURED AT SPECIAL CEREMONY | Media Release 17.05.2012 | Printable Version

A new street in Hailsham has been named after twin town Gournay-en-Bray at a special ceremony held on Sunday [May 13]. The Gournay Road sign was officially unveiled during a gathering presided over by the Mayor of Hailsham, Councillor Jeff Bentley-Astor, and the Mayor of Gournay-en-Bray, Mr Jean-Lou Pain.

The Town Crier Councillor Geoff Rowe was also in attendance along with local residents, French visitors and a strong contingent from both twinning associations.

The idea to name a street in Hailsham after its twin town was put forward in 2010 by the town council’s Twinning Anniversary Celebrations working group to recognise the already strong, 10-year relationship between the two communities. Hailsham & District Twinning Association Chairman Keith Townsend said, “The town council, my fellow members and I thought it was a marvellous idea to name a road in Hailsham after our twin town”...... The Hailsham Heritage Centre has reopened for the 2012 season with a host of new exhibitions and interesting historical items.

The Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Richard Grocock was on hand to declare the museum, located in Blackman’s Yard in Market Street, officially open on Friday [4 th May] at an event attended by members of the public and representatives from the Hailsham Historical Society.

After the official opening of the museum, Councillor Richard Grocock said, “The Hailsham Historical & Natural History Society’s programme of talks and activities in 2011 was a big success and an even bigger series of events and additional guest speakers have been scheduled for 2012.”

“The Heritage Centre itself has been at the heart of Hailsham for a long time and has served the town well. I encourage everyone to come and visit the museum – volunteer staff are looking forward to welcoming visitors from near and far and sharing their knowledge of this important town with you!”...... A project aimed specifically at providing young people in Hailsham with organised outings on Friday evenings was officially launched by the Town Mayor at Freedom Leisure Centre on Friday [April 27].
The ‘Friday Night Project’, funded by the Safer Wealden Partnership and organised by Hailsham Town Council’s Square Youth Café and Hailsham Youth Council, works in partnership with Hailsham Community College, Targeted Youth Support (TYS) and Freedom Leisure to reduce anti-social behaviour amongst young people and help create alternative recreational activities for young people.
Friday Night Project activities being organised for 12 to 17 year olds in the next 20 weeks include dry-slope skiing and snowboarding at Knockhatch Adventure Park, ten-pin bowling and fitness classes at Freedom Leisure Centre, as well as climbing, zip wire and giant swing at PGL Windmill Hill...... Hailsham Town Council is warning local businesses to update their telephone security after the Council was hit with £5,000 worth of long distance calls after someone hacked into their system.
Several local businesses have been victims of the scheme in recent months, which involves people from an external location hacking into a business’s internal telephone system, sometimes referred to as ‘private branch exchange’ or PBX.
Police and security experts say organised crime groups use technology to tap into business phone systems and steal long-distance services. The perpetrator then uses the stolen telephone service to make their own long distance calls or calls to premium rate numbers, resulting in the business being left with significant long distance call charges on their bill, payment of which they are liable for..... A popular day centre for over 55s in Hailsham re-opened its doors on Thursday [26th January], following a major refurbishment. Over 30 people gathered for the official re-opening of the Charles Hunt Centre in Vicarage Field - home to Age Concern Hailsham, Hellingly & Herstmonceux – which has been renovated over the Christmas and New Year period.
Deputy Town Mayor Richard Grocock cut a ribbon in front of guests, which included Age Concern Hailsham president Geoff Rowe and chairman Alan Faulkner, to declare the Centre’s doors open to members.
25 years on, the facility still thrives with approximately 450 members and some 60 volunteers. The centre remains totally self-financing, monies coming from fund raising events, donations and nominal profits from services..... Read more

“I hope that you had a pleasant Christmas break and spent an enjoyable New Year’s Eve with friends and family members.
It is a great honour to be Mayor of Hailsham and over the last few weeks I have enjoyed the growing excitement in the town over the approach of Christmas, having participated in numerous seasonal events. I would like to thank all those who provided me with such splendid hospitality at carol services, Christmas tree lighting ceremonies and festive concerts during the past few weeks.
2011, like the year before, will be remembered for financial pressures and the slow recovery of our economy. There have been additional threats of job redundancies and financial cutbacks, but we will continue to work hard this year to ensure that the effects are minimised..... Read more
