The Town Mayor for 2008-2009 is Cllr Dr Ian G. Haffenden, who was elected in May 2008.

The Deputy Town Mayor for 2008-2009 is Cllr Jeff Bentley-Astor, who was elected in May 2008.

The role of the Mayor includes:

Acting as an ambassador for the town of Hailsham, promoting it regionally and internationally

Fostering strong working relationships with local trade and industry

Supporting local charities and community groups

Promoting, wherever possible, the educational and vocational life of Hailsham

Chairing council meetings

Receiving regional and international visitors

Representing the town of Hailsham at civic functions and engagements

During the Civic year, the Mayor supports a wide variety of community events throughout the Hailsham area, from local charity open events to international conferences and from visits to schools through to centenary birthdays. The Mayor receives invitations to various types of events and every invitation is considered equally. If the Mayor is unable to attend a particular function, the Deputy Mayor may attend on his behalf.
