Environment Hailsham
Environment Hailsham was established in 1990 with the aim to restore, preserve and enhance the character of Hailsham and its environment.
As a civic amenity organisation, we concern ourselves with all aspects of the town, from the high profile battles to getting some of our historic buildings restored iand brought backi into iuse for the community, to the mundane tasks of getting the public lavatories smartened up and regularly maintained. From co-ordinating the annual South & Southeast In Bloom competition, to the less glorious job of monitoring the ongoing problems of our local waterways and keeping an eye out for dangerous chemical leaks that devastate wildlife.
We raise money both for the day-to-day funding of our own projects and also to assist other projects that are of benefit to all sections of the community, young and old. We are, essentially, an enabling organisation: getting things preserved or highlighting things that need doing, and then leaving it to specialist groups to take over and see them through.
We have a committee of volunteers dedicated to carrying out these aims and each committee member has a specific responsibility for the different aspects of our work. Our Volunteers and Supporters' Group are members of the public who care about our local environment and support all we are doing.
One of Environment Hailsham's recent projects was the restoration of the (very) old School Master's board at St Mary's Parish Church in the town centre, which had suffered significant weather damage and general wear and tear over the years. Mr Roy Cousens, a Hailsham resident, volunteered his time to rebuild and repaint the board from scratch!
