The Future of Hailsham Community Hall (Vicarage Lane) |
A proposal for the lease of the Hailsham Community Hall to be surrendered to Wealden District Council has been approved by the Charity Commission.
|
The district council’s proposal to take on the property in Vicarage Lane as its new council hub was also welcomed by residents at an open meeting held on Monday 11th April at the Hailsham Community Hall. Members of the public, including current regular hirers of the Hall, were invited to the meeting to express their views on the proposal by Wealden District Council to redevelop the property and learn first-hand the district council’s plans for the Hall’s refurbishment and future management.
|
At the meeting, 90% (77) of the 85 residents who took part in the vote agreed to surrender the lease in order to benefit from the district council's proposals, while only 10% (8) voted against.

With the approval of the redevelopment proposal by the Charity Commission, and the formal acceptance of the scheme by Trustees, the lease was surrendered and transferred to Wealden District Council on Monday 13th June 2011.

The district council proposes to spend up to £600,000 on the refurbishment and urgent repairs needed to bring the hall up to scratch for local groups and residents, including the installation of a new roof and various internal repairs.

It has also been agreed that a separate advisory committee, comprising representatives of Wealden District Council, the Hailsham War Memorial Institute Trust and regular hirers of the Hall, will be set up to monitor the venue’s annual programme of bookings, review hire fees and to consider any matters raised by hirers of the facility.
